The Brink Lab series of educational programs offers a window into the creative process with artists and creators who are tackling matters of social significance. This laboratory of ideas provides a range of immersive experiences shedding light on acts of creation from a studio visit with an eco-friendly design firm to a technical dress rehearsal with a world renowned dance company confronting thorny social issues to a debriefing with the creative team of a musical that engaged questions of authorship, collaboration, social criticism, and artistic independence and recognition.

ZZ Packer - Reading and Discussion
May 10th, 2011 ZZ packer performed a reading of her work and discussed her personal creative writing process and life as a professional writer. The talk was followed by an informal reception.
Ms. Packer’s 2003 short story collection, Drinking Coffee Elsewhere,was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and lauded by Harper’s, The New Yorker, and New York Times. Ms. Packer’s resume is astounding: She was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for Fiction in 2005; named one of Granta’s Best of Young American Novelists in the spring of 2007; and named one of Smithsonian Magazine’s Young Innovators in October 2007. Most recently, The New Yorker featured ZZ Packer as one of it’s “20 under 40″ luminary fiction writers in June 2010.

Paul Taylor Dance Company - Dress Rehearsal

Artists on the Brink and the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York were invited to attend a dress rehearsal with the Paul Taylor Dance Company at New York City Center. The Company’s namesake and world renowned choreographer Paul Taylor was present at this rehearsal.
From its earliest years, the Paul Taylor Dance Company brought modern dance to America’s college campuses and small towns as well as its large cultural centers, and in 1960 the Company made its first international tour. It has since performed in more than 520 cities in 62 countries. A master of dance, Paul Taylor remains among the most sought-after choreographers working today, commissioned by ballet companies and presenting organizations the world over. Whether revealing mankind’s savage nature, expressing the ineffable sadness of a dysfunctional family, or pushing the physical bounds of human achievement, Paul Taylor moves audiences as masterfully as he moves dancers.

Moorhead and Moorhead - Studio Visit
February 16th, 2011 The substance of this studio visit included: an introduction to Granger and Robert Moorhead and their practice; representative projects; insights into

their design process and the working space, materials, and tools of a design team. Moorhead & Moorhead’s projects address: design and social change; design and enriching civic space and lived experience; crafting a journey through physical space; innovative use of materials; and the role of the built environment in capturing the public imagination or facilitating peace of mind, contemplation, and introspection.

POP The Musical – Panel Discussion and Music

December 14th, 2010 Artists on the Brink, in collaboration with the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York, Yale GALA, and the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program (GMTWP) at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
GMTWP alumae Anna K. Jacobs and Maggie-Kate Coleman in an educational enrichment program related to their musical POP!, which had its world premiere at the Yale Repertory Theatre and was developed at the inaugural Yale Institute for Music Theatre.
Anna and Maggie-Kate were joined by actors Randy Harrison, Brian Charles Rooney, and Amy Burgess and musical director Lynne Shankel. This memorable panel discussion delved into the conception, realization, and execution of an impressive work tackling Andy Warhol’s legacy and recreating the buzz of The Factory in the context of musical theater experience packaged as a work of conceptual art. The evening included performances from the musical. An informal reception followed the program.
