Co-founders Stephanie Jalove and Osa Wallander

–Bryan Santiago co-founder NYC

While living in NYC I had an idea of producing a theater event consisting of a few shortone-act original plays and all proceeds would be donated to a non-profit doing important work somewhere in the world. I thought it would be a great opportunity to bring together actors, playwrights, directors for a great cause. For many reasons I was never able to realize my dream in NY. Years later while living in Los Angeles and going from audition to audition the idea came back to me. I wanted so badly to do art with a purpose. My dear friend Stephanie and I one evening had a long conversation about our dreams and desires that ended up in an agreement to create a show similar to what I had dreamed up years earlier. We let our imagination fly and decided to bring together as many different art forms as we could for a one night event to raise money for children with AIDS in Africa. It was a remarkable and challenging journey. What struck me the most was the response we were getting from the artists. I had no idea that there were so many creative people out there that just wanted to share their art and give back to the community. It was the most encouraging experience. After three successful events in Los Angeles AOTB has now taken root in NYC, it seems my dream came true after all and so much bigger than I had ever imagined. Under the leadership of Bryan Santiago I’m now watching this organization grow and flourish, creating art and value. It brings me great joy and pride to know that I was apart of this journey.

—Osa Wallander  co-founder Los Angeles

“With an upbringing that encouraged humility, working hard and being of service when and where I could, my creative pursuits in Los Angeles left my soul feeling dissatisfied. In a not-so-random conversation with my then coworker Osa Wallander, I realized I had met someone who shared my desire to create art in an others-centered way AND who exceeded my determintation to do so. We envisioned creating an entire show–which would include all kinds of performance and fine art–from which all money raised would be donated to Save the Children.  We only planned on creating one magical, all-encompassing night of creative expression, but realized our mission was bigger than one event. Thus, we started building Artists on the Brink– one dedicated hour and donated dollar at a time– so that we could have a means for “creating art to inspire hope” (our first mission statement) on a regular basis .

I believe possibilities are endless and the positive chain reaction one grass-roots organization can produce is limitless. My only wish has been to speak to the hearts of anyone who encounters the work of Artists on the Brink.”
